While recognising that your guidelines state ” breaching of county boundaries shall be avoided as far as practicable”, i would like to emphasize the crucial importance of keeping the whole of County Leitrim intact, in the one constituency.
This is currently the situation with the Sligo/Leitrim constituency.
However, in earlier years, Leitrim was split between two constituencies, thus making it virtually impossible for any Leitrim-based candidate to win a seat. The county was left without a TD for a mumber of years.
That situation led to serious dissatisfaction and protests until the Sligo/Leitrim constituency was restored.
Whatever you do, don’t go down that road again. Leitrim has the smallest population of any of the 26 counties (indeed the 32 counties) and it would totally unacceptable to consider splitting the county ever again.
